The
Jennis Effect

Way ago, just beyond the cusp of remembering, there swirled into existence a galaxy of gods. As is the way with most all-powerful beings, they became bored with their omnipotence and created a race of mortals for their amusement. They placed these mortals on the planet Eutowe and watched from above, as well as mingled and played with their creations. Over time, worship from the mortals made the gods take themselves-and their mortal pets-seriously. So it was one day that the most popular gods met and decided to grant the loudest request of their followers: do away with Thorppe, the god of misfortune. The vote was unanimous to be rid of him: Thorppe was constantly messing things up, even for the other immortals, and they were somewhat embarrassed that they had not come up with the idea themselves. They sought their omnipotent brother immediately in order to destroy him, but much to their surprise, he was not to be found. Mystified, but satisfied with the result nonetheless, the gods announced the news to the rejoicing populace of Eutowe. | |||

Thorppe had literally seen the handwriting on the wall: his only temple, usually ignored and avoided, had been vandalized and defaced. His most recent public appearance, ordinarily a source of fear and dread, this time produced a hail of ridicule-and rocks-hurled in his direction. Such disrespect demanded punishment, but his fellow gods prevented retaliation…and in some cases, rewarded the insulting behavior. Thorppe didn't need to be omniscient to realize his days were numbered. He fled Eutowe and sought refuge in the only place he knew the others could not find him: he entered into the body of another living being. Thorppe realized the only way to hide was to mask his life-force with that of another. Thus the god of misfortune was reduced to an existence of body-hopping across the universe. |
