Warring with his neighbor and suffering several seasons of drought-stunted crops, Lord Strumalt of Bermarc was desperate. Seeking relief for himself and his people, Strumalt agreed to ask the services of a young mage newly arrived in town. Word of the wizard's incredible feats-supplied by the mage himself in exchange for room, board, and pints of ale-had reached the beleaguered lord. Summoned to the court, the wizard arrived quickly, eager to provide his services. He introduced himself as Awlmys of Thenloch, an adept spell-student newly released from his mentor's tuition. Having learned all that books could impart, Awlmys was sent forth to gain experience in battle tests and games of cunning. After traveling many a day and meeting with many a challenge, he now sought the employ and position of a man befitting his talents. After providing a few demonstrations of his command of the craft, Awlmys was offered just reward for his efforts on Strumalt's behalf. A deal was struck and a course of action was plotted. The next day, Lord Strumalt led his men to the plain where his enemy Lord Ardmore had encamped. Assured of a swift victory, Strumalt hurled insults and taunts towards the camp. Goaded into a premature attack, Ardmore and his troops flooded across the open field. Awlmys stepped forth and began to chant. A whirlwind formed around the wizard, then hurtled towards Ardmore under Awlmys' guiding hand. The wind met with the first wave of fighters-and left nothing in its wake. Terrified, the rest of the army turned to flee, but were caught in the advancing cyclone. |
